In my hands was a drink of cola and a burrito. We were out in the park after going to a Taco Bell and cruising about the place for a while. I never understood how Logan could even *begin* to tolerate Mr. Summers. I mean, I saw the guy actually be *friends* with him, and I never got it. Mr. Summers had always been such a jerk.

"You really did that?"

"Hell yeah."

"And the Professor didn't get angry at you?"

Summers shrugged. "Did he get angry at you when you drank his prize scotch?"

I shook my head long. "No, he just looked kinda disappointed."

He just eyed me through his glasses and I nodded in understanding.

"So... you think I'm a jerk for what I did?"

"No way," said Scott, leaning back on the park bench we were sitting on. "You're young, you're feeling like you're invinsible, and you've just gotten your first girlfriend." He tipped his head at me. "Not saying that what you did was right, but I totally understand where you're coming from."

"Cool."

Summers gave a wry smile.

"I hope Jean isn't too hard on Sarah. She's had it tough with her Dad, you know. That guy is a real asshole."

"I know," said Summers. "If I know my Jean, and I do, I think she'll be her usual fair but stern self."

"Which Sarah will totally not react well to," I said.

They were two women of amazing will. They were bound to smack heads. I just hoped Sarah wouldn't get crappy at me for not hating Summers anymore.

When I got home, the first person I ran into was Logan. Cool. I pulled him aside, scratchin behind my ears.

"Dude... why didn't you tell me Summers was cool?"

Logan looked mildly amused. "So you think he's cool now?"

I widened my eyes. "Well he's not the greatest dude out, but before I totally thought he was a dick!"

"Oh, he can be a dick if he wants," Logan said, folding his arms. "He just has to do this 'fearless leader' schtick. He's a jerk but he ain't all bad. You did okay then?"

"Yeah, he let me use that cool spray-gun to wash the Blackbird and then we ate burritos."

Logan smirked. "Couldn't stand the thought of you ruining the paint job huh?"

"Well, you'd be the same with your bike."

Logan eyed me seriously. "Damned straight."

I smiled at him, and it broke Logan's firm demeanour. He scruffed my hair roughly, making it into a big kinda messy poof and pushed me away.

"Go find your girlfriend," he said, "She could probably use the distraction after being stuck with Authoratarian Jeannie for an hour."

"Totally," I agreed, and went to find Sarah.

OOC: Nacey - I kinda liked Cool!Scott. Wish he'd make an appearance more often..

Back to.. the pain! ::dramatic sigh::

Groaning at the pain in her head and wrists, Cassandrea opened her eyes slowly. Rule one when getting knocked out by a psycho: figure out where the psycho is. Unfortunately, he was sitting directly across from her. /Oh this is just perfect,/ she thought furrowing her brow. /Ow. Okay, no facial expressions./

"Oh, good, you're awake. I thought maybe I had knocked you into a coma or something," Ben chuckled.

She glared at him. /Yeah, that's really considerate of you./ In her attempt to stand she found that her hands and feet were bound with some sort of gooey substance. Testing the bonds, she found that they were quite strong but had the smallest amount of elasticity. /Don't panic. Do *not* panic./ It was a little late for that.

"Water?" he reached for a water bottle and stood, holding it out to her. Cassandrea shook her head. He shrugged and took a gulp. "You had a pretty nasty gash on your head. I patched it up for you."

/Let's not forget who put it there,/ she thought grimly. "Where am I?" Her best guess put her in one of the storage warehouses - far enough from main campus that if she screamed, it was unlikely that anyone would hear her. Her heart pounded faster in her chest.

"I always thought you were pretty." He crouched down beside her and fingered a lock of indigo hair. "I've wanted to tell you that since the first time I saw you."

She whipped her head back, lamely flipping her hair out of his grasp. "People are going to come looking for me." /Oh, gods, please let someone be on their way,/ she thought desperately.

"Yeah." He stated it simply, letting his hand drop. It scared her how much he didn't care. He stood and paced around the room. "You know, you play these games with me."

"I've never played any games, Ben. I thought we were friends. That's all."

"You're lying!" he shouted, slamming the water bottle into the cement floor. His eyes turned into those black pools then, his face twisting into a maniacal grin. "But it's okay. I can play too."

Cassandrea threw herself against the wall so fast she smacked her head against the metal paneling. She pressed her eyes closed against the compounded pain. Opening them again, she took notice of the water pooling at her feet. /What the hell am I doing? You have powers, use them you stupid girl./

Taking several deep breaths to center herself, she shifted into water form and tried to slide quickly out of her bonds. It was more difficult than it seemed: like an oil slick, the substance spread across her liquid skin, and it took several attempts before she was completely free. Taking the shape of a lamia - half snake, half woman - and silently thanking Ms. Munroe for the Danger Room sessions, she wound her way through the maze of boxes and equipment towards the exit.

"Come back here, you bitch!" Ben shouted as he ran after her.

Quickening her pace, she broke through the double doors into the fading sunlight of late afternoon. She stopped for a second, trying to figure out where the hell she was. The pause cost her, though. Ben was hot on her heels, shortening the gap between them.

"Never an X-Team around when you need one," she hissed. She veered left towards what was hopefully upper campus. "Shit!" She slid to a stop as Ben appeared in front of her.

He shook his head, smiling that twisted smile. "Why can't you just admit we were meant to be?" His jaw dropped open and black tendrils shot out of his mouth, covering Cassandrea in the tar-like substance.

I found Sarah later on in the gym, and boy, was she pissed. She was saying things to that punching bag she was attacking that I would never say to my worst enemy. I guessed things with Jean went as I expected.

"So, did she make you clean test tubes?"

"Yup and anything else she could find. And she just had to talk to me while I did it." Sarah sent a killer whack to the punching bag, and the beam it hung off shook. "I think being locked in my quarters is a much better plan. It might just keep me from killing her."

I sighed, walking to her and offering my arms to her in a hug.

"I hate this place," she said, her words muffled against my chest, "And I hate her."

"Yeah, but if you stick it out you'll get to a point where Jean can only tell you what to do on the field. And even then you'll have some leeway." I kissed the side of her head then, nuzzling her.

"That's not a whole lot of comfort, you know."

I sighed, meeting her eyes. "Well - I'll be here. Is that any consolation?"

Sarah's dark look faded and was replaced by a mischievious grin. "Depends on how you're going to console me."

Well, Sarah wasn't really one for sharing, so her change in topic didn't suprise me. I let my own mischevious smile slip on my face, and enclosing my arms about her I brought my lips to her neck, brushing them lightly before grazing the point of one of my teeth across her skin.

"Eww...get a room already!"' Sarah laughed at Jubilee's less than subtle prounouncement as she bounced int he door, pretending to be disgusted. Like I haven't run into her and Remy in a stairwell or two.

I tipped my head. "That might be a good suggestion. Mine or yours?"

"Yours. Cass should be home from the library by now. Unless, of course you want her to join us?"

I lifted a brow, and decided to rib her for that one. "Well.. if that's what you're into..."

Sarah was about to remark when Jubilee bounded up to us, looking a little lost.

"Okay, so this is weird right? Cause I was gonna chase down Cassie after her classes, I totally told her I was, and she was going to help me with an outfit for a date tomorrow with Remy. But she's totally not around. That's weird, okay? She should be here."

"She said something about a paper yesterday. She probably just got caught up at the library."

Jubilee snarled. "Nyeeeh. My danger nerves are jangling baby. Hunchin' that something's not right."

I frowned. "Well, your 'danger nerves' jangle when you're out of fairy sticks, Jubilee. Still... this isn't like Cass."

Jubilee sighed deeply, features harried. "Damn it. I'm gonna scope out the grounds. Maybe I missed her or something."

I shrugged, looking to Sarah. "My room then?"

"Works for me," she said. We set off for my room, leaving Jubes to gripe and grumble.

Flailing on the grass like a dolphin caught in a net, she gasped for air. She shifted back to her fleshy-self to slow the spread of the subtance and screamed as some the tar became embedded into her muscles and skin. /Crap. Crapcrapcrapcrapcrap. Next time I'm late for class, I'm not going. If there is a next time.../ With the hand that was still free, she formed an orb and threw it towards Ben. It sloshed harmlessly against the ground. /Bad aim. Bad, bad, horrible aim./

"Hey! What the fuck do you think you're doing, you creep?" a familiar voice shouted.

/Alison. If she gets me out of here, I will never be mean to her again. Well, not never. But I'll be nicer, I swear./ Cassandrea tried shouting to the blonde, but breathing was becoming an issue.

Halting his attack on Cassie, he turned to face the newcomer. "Who the hell are you?"

"Just a concerned student," Alison replied jovially. "And, dude, you just barfed some really nasty goo all over my friend there."

"It's none of your business," he growled. "Get out of here!"

Not feeling particularly threatened by this lowlife, Alison stood her ground, turning up the volume on her discman. "I think you're the one who should get gone." She started with a low-level light show, prepared to pump it up to blinding if the guy pushed her.

"Oooh, fireworks. How scary!" Ben mocked. "What kind of lame power is that?"

/Jubes would so fry your ass for that,/ Cassie thought with a small bit of satisfaction.

Ben opened his mouth again, shooting a stream of tar at Alison. The Dazzler was quick on her feet, though, and out of the way in a flash - literally. She intensified the energy she was putting out and it looked as though she had disappeared in a flash of light.

"Hey, lame ass, I'm over here!" she taunted from behind him. He turned to face her and she flashed more multi-colored lights in his face, stunning him. Alison ran over to Cassie, wiping the tar from her face.

Cassandrea coughed and gulped much needed oxygen into her lungs. "We have to get out of here."

"No shit," Alison grimaced, wiping more of the black tar from Cassie's body, glancing up now and then to make sure Ben was stumbling around. "Man, what is this crap?" Cassandrea hissed as some of her skin was removed with the black goo. "I can't get it off. I'll have to ca--"

Cassie watched in horror as Ben tackled the blonde, her head making a dull thud on the ground. He straddled her and started to wrap her in a sticky cocoon while she struggled, orbs of light flashing all over. "Alison!"

He looked upon her with souless eyes. "Don't worry. I won't let her spoil our fun." Leaving Alison sufficiently incapacitated, Ben threw Cassandrea over his shoulder and lugged her back towards the warehouse.

OOC: I really am going to get some sleep. Really I am.

note - 2/21/o2 5:45 pm - Next time I go to post this late at night somebody please smack me

Sarah sat sunning at her desk, trying to concentrate on her chemistry book. It wasn't working. Growling in frustration, decided to give up and go change for bed.

No sooner than she'd put her towel on the rack to dry, than Kurt bampfed into the middle of her room.

"What the fuck are you doing!" Sarah screamed, grabbing the towel back off the rack.

"Ah sorry, Sarah," the fuzzy blue mutant offered, covering his eyes and turning his back. "I didn't think you'd be here."

"Right. It's not like it's my room or anything." Sarah sighed. "Sorry Kurt. Long day. Did you want something, or was this just a social call."

"Have you seen Cassandrea?"

"No," Sarah replied trying to hold onto the towel and hunt down a t-shirt. "Jubes was looking for her earlier."

"It’s after 11 and her car’s not back. She’s not answering her cell phone either."

Sarah blinked. Now that *really* didn’t sound like Cassie.

"Maybe she left a message. Did you check the machine?"

"Uh no." Sarah gave an embarrassed smile. "I didn’t think about it. It’s her machine."

Kurt pushed play. Call her mother. Library book overdue.

"Whoa. Who’s that?" Sarah asked as the male voice played out over the tinny machine.

Whoever this guy was who left these messages, they were creepy. As the messages ended, Kurt had a sick feeling in his stomach. It was late. Cassandrea wasn’t home. And some other guy was leaving messages on her machine.

This was not good.

After Ben had dragged her back into the warehouse, he dropped her on the cold floor and stood over her, just staring at her with those black eyes. After awhile, he'd started alternating between pacing and talking to himself and screaming at her for about an hour before he mumbled something about his mother and left her alone in the dark.

/Just my luck. Stalked by a college guy with a mommy complex./ Cassie struggled, not making much progress against the sticky tar that encased her. She'd chanced shifting into liquid form once, but the stuff started spreading again and she was forced to change back.

/Someone's on the way. I'm *sure* someone's on the way. Kurt must have noticed that I'm gone by now. Hell, Jubes was supposed to ambush me so I could help her pick a dress for her date. She *definitely* would have noticed./ She wimpered at the pain of the tar still embedded in her flesh. Pain was good, though. Pain gave her something to focus on.

/Maybe I could get some light in here at least./ "Dark of night give way to light. Shine thy rays to...to.." She growled in frustration. /I know this. I know how to do this./ She took a deep breath and tried again. "Dark of night give way to light. Shine thy brilliant rays to ease thy child's plight." A tiny spec appeared in the air, expanding until it was about the size of a softball, illuminating the immediate area with golden light. Cassandrea sighed and slouched against the crate at her back.

There comes a point when constant pain becomes so dull, you don't feel it anymore. Cassandrea hit that point some time around 9:00pm. That's when she started freaking out.

"Where the hell are you guys! Come on, where's the crack team of mutant superheroes to rescue me?" she hissed. "Somebody get me the hell out of here!" she screamed uselessly. "Kurt, get your fuzzy blue ass in here!"

Using the crate for support, she struggled to stand up, but only succeeded in banging her head against the concrete when she fell forward. "Damn it. Now I probably have a concussion. Are you guys happy now? I have a concussion because you couldn't get your leather-wearing asses in here fast enough!" She scream in frustration, shouting every curse she had ever heard.

"Somebody...somebody's coming for me," she said quietly, fighting back tears. "They'll be here. They'll be here soon."

OOC: This is very gloppy. For that, I apologize.

I was woken by rough shaking. It wasn't what I was expecting, not since I fell asleep with a naked and happy Sarah. It was Sarah, of course, but she was dressed, and there was someone behind her. I squinted, cause the light in my room was on and everything was bright.

"Get up, now."

I groaned. "What? Jubilee? I was kidding about the threesome, babe..."

Sarah rolled her eyes. "Oh shut up. Cassie's missing!"

"Missing...?"

"Yeah," said Jubes, uncharactaristicly ignoring the threesome naff, "She's still not home and it's one in the morning."

I jumped out of bed without thinking, scrabbling for clothes. I forgot I was naked.

"WOAH!" Jubilee span about, covering her eyes, "So didn't wanna see that!"

Sarah lifted a brow at Jubes before tapping her shoulder. "Come on - let's go meet up with Rogue. Max, Logan and Rogue will be meeting us at the door to the lower levels. Be there in five."

She left the room then. I got dressed and got there. We were met with Logan and Rogue, along with Scott, Jean, Hank, Ororo and the Professor.

"Glad you all could make it," he said. "Let's get started."

We discussed a lot of things. Where Cassie was seen last. When she was supposed to be back. This and that. I could see Sarah slowly losing her patience, Logan along with her. Professor X was about to go into some more postulating when Logan grabbed me by the collar and yanked me to the door.

"You guys keep yakkin' it up," he snarled. "I'm gonna go search the collage grounds with WonderCat here."

"Claw..." I sighed.

"Yeah whatever. We're goin'. You can bleep us on the comm-linky things."

Rogue stood, fidgeting with her pockets. She stared at the Professor for a moment, who lifted a brow expectantly.

"You know I gotta run outta here too, right?"

"Go on," said Professor X with a sigh. "We'll message you if we find out anything useful from the students."

"Thanks!" she said, racing from the room.

I barely remember being dumped on the back of Logan's bike with the spare helmet and blasting down the road towards Cassie's school. I was still half asleep, and if you've ever seen a half asleep cat, you know that a lot can happen to them before they wake up properly.

I eventually woke up properly.

Sarah glanced at the door that Logan, Max and Rogue just exited and made her decision.

Rogue straddled her bike just as Sarah made it to the garage. "Where are you going?"

"With you."

"We don’t know what the problem is. I know you’re worried, but..."

"Cass came after me. I owe her."

"Logan’s going to be pissed, but he’ll get over it, But if things get ugly and I tell you to go. You go. Understood? We do not need you spending another week in med lab."

"Understood. Med lab’s not something I’m looking forward to either."

Rogue smiled and tossed her a helmet, knowing it was a lie. She used to do the same to Logan.

*****

Rogue pulled up beside Logan and a still sleepy Max atop a hill overlooking campus. "Any luck?"

"Found her car," Logan grumbled, "but the trail’s cold."

"Shit."

"That’s the sum of it."

"Any other ideas?"

"What’s that?" Sarah asked pointing off toward the far edge of campus.

Logan and Rogue followed Sarah’s finger to the sparkles shooting into the sky and smiled. "That, princess, is our lead."

OOC: Mini postage. Which is not really mini. *shrug*

Darkness surrounded her and the sound of her own sobbing was loud in her ears. It was strange that the restricting tar that held her captive was actually keeping her warm against the cold of night. How long had it been since she was left in this place? Someone would come for her. She had friends, people who cared for her and missed her. They'd be looking for her. If not now, soon. If not soon...

She didn't want to think about it. Help was coming and that was it. The Professor would assemble a team. Mr. Summers would probably lead the group. Maybe Sarah and Max would come for her. Certainly Kurt was coming. But...

Maybe they couldn't find her. Maybe no one was coming. Maybe no one had noticed that she was gone. Maybe she was going to die here. Maybe they would find her and it would be too late. Maybe...

She heard it then - the sound of the heavy metal door as it creaked open. Footfalls on the cement echoing against the silence of the warehouse. They were coming closer. She pressed her eyes closed and hoped to Goddess that it was someone come to save her.

It wasn't. Ben was back.

OOC: I would have written more but I have *such* a headache. Sorry :(

Logan all but forced me to stay down as the guy went into the abandoned building we'd traced Cassie down to. I didn't get why he wanted us to wait.

"Let's just rip his fucking head off!" I hissed quietly.

"We will," Logan hissed back, "Just wait a second."

"For what, the Second Coming?!"

Sarah eyed Logan, and I could tell she was itching for some head-bashing too.

"No," said Logan. "For Kurt to come out of hiding."

Suddenly there was a pop, or more of a 'bamph' in the air, and the stink of sulphur wafted past. I waved my paws wildly and groaned.

"Jesus, Kurt, couldn't you have popped up over there?"

"Sorry," said Kurt. I immediately felt like a jerk for berating him, as I could hear the worry in his voice.

"It's all right," said Logan.

"You knew I was here?" said Kurt.

"You were ghosting us all the way here right?" Logan nodded. "I can smell you anywhere, Kid." Kurt looked crestfallen, at least till Logan slapped him on the shoulder. "Don't worry. We're gonna go get your girlfriend now."

I rubbed my hands together eagerly, and Logan snickered.

"You're a real piece of work, Max."

"I learnt all I know from the best."

At that, we began to decend on our target.
